Stop and sit with your grandparents

I spent an evening down my grandparents house, let me tell you…it was nice.  Often times we take for granted the company that our elders can provide.  Both my maternal grandparents are still alive and live in San Gabriel, CA, it is very difficult to visit at times due to my hectic schedule, kid and social calendar, however, I made it a point to spend last evening with them.  It was a humid day and not very pleasing, but something about their house brings back nostalgic memories of the past.  As we sat out in their yard surrounded by fig trees, apricots, apples and lemons I could not help but close my eyes and breathe in.  I breathed the smells of my childhood, growing up in the Italian country side, with the afternoon breeze blowing on my face and the birds chirping happily about.  My son was running all around as if it were a novelty to do so, it was the perfect afternoon.  As the sun sat, we moved to their open patio to enjoy some cold drinks, pizza and fresh fruit.  It was truly amazing, to look into their eyes and know that it all began with them, and to have their granddaughter and great grandson really put a sparkle in their eye.  The night approached fast ans it was time to drive back home, as we pulled out of their sloped driveway, I couldn’t help but tear up…..moments like these are few, enjoy them while you have the chance because some day you to will be like them and wish to see your family.
